By ignoring the illegality of the question, you are putting yourself at risk with your answer as a candidate, as the employer may have a hidden agenda. 2) Choose not to answer it. Instead, be assertive and state: “I don’t see how this question impacts my ability to do the job, and I should alert you that this question is actually illegal under federal and state employment laws.” Or, you can refuse to answer the question, which is perfectly within your rights, but obviously, the employer might take this the wrong way and see you as confrontational instead. 3) Choose to answer the question by providing an answer that pertains specifically to the job. Examine the intent of the question and respond to that instead of the bumbled question itself. Example: The employer asks if you are a U.S. citizen (illegal question) but you respond: “I am authorized to work in the United States.” These responses require some quick thinking and assessment as to how badly you need the job versus how well are you doing in the interview up until this point. There is risk involved, all the way around. Ultimately, however, the convention rule of thumb is that interviews go both ways. You are interviewing the employer as much as they are interviewing you. If they exhibit inappropriate or illegal behavior in the interview, you need to realize that this could be just the tip of the iceberg and could be an indicator of what the daily work environment is like. Most employers care about creating a healthy workplace, and would avoid asking such questions during the interview, especially since there is a great deal of legal risk involved in asking illegal questions during that process. When you are looking for a job, knowing where you are going is the most important thing. As Cindy notes: What good is climbing the ladder if its leaning against the wrong wall? To help you figure out the right wall This is what Cindy says: Envision yourself 5 years from now  being featured in an article for a magazine or newspaper.  Ã‚   Ask yourself these questions: What  publication is featuring the article? Who are you or what have you done to gain the interest of the magazine? Now consider some questions that might be asked by the interviewer: What lead you to this path in your life and in your work?   How have your core values influenced your path?   What are the steps that you took to get here?   What were the milestones along the way?   What do you love about your life and your accomplishments?   What have been the obstacles along the way and how have you surmounted them?   What has your work  brought to  you? Notice that all of these questions are in the present tense.   When you answer them, keep that present tense. So, what do you think? When you envision yourself 5 years down the road, what magazine is writing an article about you? Why? Cindy suggests you think about: Who have you become or what have you done that has captured the publications interest?  Ã‚  Ã‚  At the top of a piece of paper, write the name of the magazine.   Leave room for an article title youll fill that in last.
